Travis James Humphrey: Listen
Shonna Leigh
She’s a strong wind blowing softly,
as the seasons start to change.
A loon song in the early morning,
just before the dawn becomes the day.
She’s clear thinking when I get stubborn;
when anger breaks my peace, she helps me crack a smile.
And when the darkness in my spirit overwhelms me,
she holds me close and quiet for awhile.
She’s a misguided angel, to quote a lady;
a bird on a wire, to quote a gentleman.
A writer paying dues, a county-girl in city-shoes,
and she is, she is my Shonna Leigh.
Well, she’s an artist and creator
of peaceful feelings, pumpkin pie, and prose.
How she puts so much love into everything she does,
only God and Betty Crocker knows.
She’s a daughter and an auntie; it’s really something to see,
the way she gives pure from her heart.
I think she falls asleep and wakes up worrying about everybody else
so much, sometimes, it tears her all apart.
She’s a misguided angel, to quote a lady;
a bird on a wire, to quote a gentleman.
A writer paying dues, a county-girl in city-shoes,
and she is, she is my Shonna Leigh.
